Hotel Dieu Hospital Food Blitz hits the streets May 13

Volunteer canvassers for the 30th Annual Hotel Dieu Hospital Food Blitz will be running door to door between 6 and 9 pm, Wednesday, May 13, their sights set on collecting a record amount of non-perishable food items for the Partners in Mission Food Bank.

“This will be the 30th time we have reached out to the community in our door-to-door campaign, and we’re really hoping to exceed 100,000 pounds,” says Sandy Singers, Executive Director of the Partners in Mission Food Bank.

“This is by no means a celebration but rather an acknowledgement of the troubling fact that after so many years the need for our service is still essential to those struggling with poverty in our community.”

Collection bags are scheduled to be distributed with the May 7th edition of Kingston This Week.  People are asked to fill the bag with non-perishable food items only. The Food Bank is in particular need of peanut butter, juice, rice, tuna, canned fruits and canned vegetables but all donations are welcome.  Baby food and formula will be gratefully accepted also.

On Blitz night, householders can hand donations to identified canvassers at the door or to leave them bagged on the doorstep for pick-up.

Since the fall of 2008 the Food Bank has experienced a 26.5 per cent increase in demand for assistance, says Executive Director Sandy Singers.

“Last year, we had an additional increase of 5.5 per cent,” he says.  “We’re grateful for assistance from the community at this time of year when we really need to stock up for the summer months ahead.”

Donations can also be dropped off weekdays at the Food Bank at 140 Hickson Ave. or at all major grocery retailers.  Monetary donations can be made via the Food Bank’s website at
