Donations to Hotel Dieu Hospital

2017 October:

The contribution of the final installment of a major $100,000 pledge highlighted the annual general meeting of KHSC Volunteer Services to Hotel Dieu Hospital Site Kingston, Inc. on October 16.

A cheque for $15,000 was presented to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation, the final installment on a $100,000 pledge to help facilitate the expansion of the low-vision rehabilitation clinic at the Hotel Dieu Hospital site, a first-of-its-kind clinic in Ontario that supports individuals who have lost vision that cannot be improved with surgery, medicine or standard glasses.  A multi-disciplinary approach, vision rehabilitation therapy uses technology and common experience to help individuals cope with visual impairment and achieve a sense of accomplishment as they regain some level of independence that eye disease may have taken away.

2016 December: Hospital volunteers announced close to $35,000 in contributions towards excellent patient care including:

  • $17,000 to the hospital’s Low Vision Rehabilitation Clinic, which helps individuals cope with visual impairment and achieve a sense of accomplishment as they regain some level of independence that eye disease may have taken away. Total donation of $100,000 over 2 yrs.
  • $10,000 to The KidsInclusive Centre for Child & Youth Development to help with the financial boost families need to purchase writing aids and assistive devices.
  • $7,500 to the Ear, Nose and Throat Department, an amount that will be matched by the Larry Gibson Estate as ENT works toward expanding its footprint and physically relocating to the main hospital building.
  • $3,500 to Child Life program to help continue its vital, day-to-day work of empowering young patients who are facing or living with health problems.
  • $2,000 to the Cardiac Clinic in memory of Mary Maclean. “We really wanted to remember Mary in a special way,” says Volunteers Services President Carol Hazell.  “She was so committed to this hospital and the patients that we’re sure she would love to be supporting them through this memorial donation.  It’s a great honour to present it to the hospital in Mary’s memory.”
  • $1,000 to Spiritual Health Department.
  • $500 to Children's Outpatient Centre.

2016 October: Volunteer Services contributed just over $100,000 in support of medical equipment, programs and services at Hotel Dieu, including:

  • $20,000 for equipment vital to the new bariatric surgery program, which is giving patients, for the first time, access to weight-loss surgery in Kingston.
  • $44,250 helped to purchase a gastrointestinal enteroscope, used in a diagnostic procedure that patients previously could access only in Toronto but can now undergo at Hotel Dieu.
  • $45,000 targeted additional medical equipment and support of children’s programs.
