Patients rate Hotel Dieu Hospital top performer

(Kingston, ON, May 1/2014) Hotel Dieu Hospital received excellent performance ratings three times over in a recent survey of Ontario hospitals that gave patients an opportunity to rate the quality of health care they received and their interaction with those providing that care.

Today, National Research Corporation Canada (NRCC) released the results of patient experience surveys conducted between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013. Hotel Dieu scored top ratings for the following services:

Urgent Care: In terms of “overall care and services received” in an emergency department, the hospital’s Urgent Care Centre was rated top performer in a group of 17 academic (teaching) hospitals. Day Surgery: Asked if they would recommend Hotel Dieu’s Day Surgery program to family or friends, patients who responded to the survey ranked the hospital first among 28 Ontario hospitals. Day Surgery: In terms of “overall care and services received,” Hotel Dieu’s Day Surgery unit was identified as one of three top performers among 28 Ontario hospitals. This is the third time in as many years that Hotel Dieu has earned top ranking in NRCC patient experience surveys. In 2012, it scored first place among provincial teaching hospitals for its urgent care services, and in 2013, it led a list of 28 hospitals as the top provider of day surgery services. Just one tool used by Hotel Dieu to listen to patients and families about their care experience, NRCC surveys are generally based on eight dimensions of patient-centred care and allow patients to evaluate hospital services and their interaction with nurses, doctors and other hospital staff.

“We’re pleased to be identified again as a top performer,” says Dr. David Pichora, CEO of Hotel Dieu.

“These results reflect our commitment to providing the best care experience possible to patients and families throughout the hospital, including areas such as Urgent Care and Day Surgery where patients facing a procedure or unexpected trip to the hospital can often be a bit anxious.

“Listening to our patients and families is vital to helping us better understand their experiences and expectations, and to ensuring we create a superior care environment for them.”
