No longer wearing that winter coat? Donate it to the Hotel Dieu Hospital Annual Coat Drive

With blustery days just around the corner, Hotel Dieu Hospital is once again looking for clean, gently used winter coats to help make the upcoming chilly season a bit warmer for many in our community.

The hospital will be collecting coats during regular business hours, Monday to Friday, Oct. 20 to Nov. 12.  Items can be dropped off in bins conveniently located just inside its Sydenham Street entrance (upper level).  In particular, people are encouraged to donate down-filled-style coats and ski jackets.  As well, men’s winter coats are a special priority.

“Ski-style jackets and coats are practical for people who are homeless or living in poverty because they’re warm, lightweight and machine washable,” says Elizabeth Bardon, Chief of Public Relations and Community Engagement.

Once coats have been collected and sorted, the distribution phase of the Coat Drive will kick into gear Nov. 17.  In a new twist this year, the distribution centre will be located at St. Mary’s Parish Hall (corner of Brock and Clergy Streets); it will operate 1-4 pm, Monday to Saturday until Dec. 22 and again from Jan. 5-17.  There will be no distribution of coats at Hotel Dieu.

“We’re very grateful to St. Mary’s Cathedral for generously providing this welcoming space for people to pick up a warm winter coat,” says Bardon.  “For us, it’s a new means of distributing coats and we’re pleased to partner with St. Mary’s in reaching out to the community.”

If you would like to volunteer to help with distribution of coats at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, please contact Pastoral Caring Coordinator Ann Lyng at 613-546-5521, extension 3 or 613-542-7612.  If you would like more information about the 2014 Coat Drive, please call 613-544-3310, ext. 2311.
