Pediatric walk-in clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital open during holiday break

Parents and caregivers with sick little ones will have pediatric health care close at hand during the Christmas break thanks to holiday hours in the Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital.  The walk-in clinic will be operating 9 am to 12 noon on Dec. 24 and from 10 am to 4 pm, Dec. 28 to 31 inclusive.

Transformative technique aims to revolutionize breast tumor surgery

Clinical trials at Hotel Dieu Hospital are using GPS-like technology to literally map a new way to perform breast tumor surgery, a transformative technique that will be the focus of a free public information session, 6-8 pm, Tuesday, Dec. 8 in the Hotel Dieu Hospital Auditorium.

Currently, surgeons performing breast tumor surgery are guided to the tumor site by a pre-positioned fine wire.  A tumor that is hard to see and feel, however, can be challenging to remove entirely and without compromising healthy tissue as well.

New surgical program gives patients access to gold standard treatment for skin cancer

One of only 13 in Canada, a new Mohs micrographic surgery program has opened at Hotel Dieu Hospital, giving patients in our region access to the gold standard treatment for complex non-melanoma skin cancers. 

Mohs surgery is largely used to treat the two most common skin cancers—basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas—and is especially useful for cancers that are large and aggressive, are likely to recur, have poorly defined borders and are located in sensitive areas of the body where it is essential to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible (e.g., head, face, neck).

Community members prioritize wait times, improved communication between providers

Feedback from the community at a series of open houses and through a broad region-wide survey is informing a large, multi-year project underway at hospitals across southeastern Ontario.

Each of the seven hospital organizations located within the South East Local Health Integration Network, as well as the South East Community Care Access Centre and the South East LHIN, launched a project called “Health Care Tomorrow – Hospital Services” last year to improve access to high quality care through the development of a sustainable system of integrated care.

Food Blitz takes in 54,400 pounds of non-perishable goods

food blitz bag on chairThe Partners in Mission Food Bank is stocking its shelves with 54,400 pounds of non-perishable goods today after canvassers went door to door last night for the 30th Annual Hotel Dieu Hospital Food Blitz.  That number will likely jump to about 66,000 pounds over the next few weeks as the Food Bank continues to pick up and receive donations.

Proceeds from Child Development Centre Run hit historic high

The final tally is in—and it’s the biggest one yet.  As the result of tremendous community support, the 2015 Child Development Centre (CDC) Run raised more than $34,000 in April, funds that will help to support hundreds of children, youth and families in our region with special needs.

The Run shot past last year’s total by almost $10,000.  In total, the Run event has now raised just over $203, 000 for specialized equipment and programs that support children and youth who have physical, neurological or developmental disabilities such as cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome and autism.

Hotel Dieu Hospital Food Blitz hits the streets May 13

Volunteer canvassers for the 30th Annual Hotel Dieu Hospital Food Blitz will be running door to door between 6 and 9 pm, Wednesday, May 13, their sights set on collecting a record amount of non-perishable food items for the Partners in Mission Food Bank.

“This will be the 30th time we have reached out to the community in our door-to-door campaign, and we’re really hoping to exceed 100,000 pounds,” says Sandy Singers, Executive Director of the Partners in Mission Food Bank.
