Urgent Consult Clinic

Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm. This clinic is staffed by a psychiatrist, nurse, social worker. This clinic provides a onetime urgent consultation for risk assessment for imminent suicide or acute behavioural deterioration. The Urgent Consult is conducted by a child and youth psychiatrist and/or a resident supervised by the psychiatrist.

  • Eligibility criteria: Any adolescent 12 or older who presents a high risk for self-harm or harm to others.
  • Time frame: Urgent Consult appointments must be within 48 hours after the patient has presented to Emergency. If no appointment is available within 48 hours, the ER can fax the information to 613-544-4643 and we will contact the patient with an appointment date and time accordingly.
  • Referral process: Referrals are accepted from ER doctors, pediatricians, family doctors and community mental health counsellors. School boards have a formal threat assessment protocol for their referrals.
  • What to expect: Patients seen in Urgent Consult may be admitted to the inpatient unit at KGH, referred to any of the outpatient clinics at Hotel Dieu, back to their referrer to one of the community mental health agencies.

ER physicians from other communities in our catchment area can contact the psychiatrist on call to discuss whether or not someone should be seen in the Urgent Consult Clinic. If the psychiatrist on call books the patient in the Urgent Clinic, the ER physician needs to fax the patient’s demographic information and the reason for the consult to 613-544-4643.
