Transfer of clinics from Kingston General Hospital to Hotel Dieu Hospital starts Feb. 19

(Kingston, ON, Feb. 19/2013) Dozens of ambulatory clinics started transferring to Hotel Dieu Hospital from Kingston General Hospital (KGH) today, a shift that advances Hotel Dieu’s role as the centre of specialized ambulatory care in the region and that ensures KGH can focus on its regional role as a centre of excellence for acute inpatient care.

Close to 80 outpatient clinics are slated to move to Hotel Dieu over the next month, representing close to 50,000 additional patient visits per year.

Most of the clinics are being transferred from the Fraser Armstrong Patient Centre at KGH, although certain ambulatory clinics will remain at KGH in order to provide patients with the full spectrum of specialty care including renal care, cancer care, obstetrics, gynecology, vascular surgery and existing cardiac activity.

Clinics that will be moving from KGH to Hotel Dieu include hematology, neurology, neurosurgery, endocrinology, urology, respirology, thoracic surgery, rheumatology, infection and immunology, internal medicine and cystoscopy. Also moving is the Pulmonary Function Testing Lab and the Anticoagulation Management Service. Many KGH staff members who have been providing excellent care to patients in the ambulatory clinics will move with the programs to Hotel Dieu.

At Hotel Dieu, the clinics will occupy 36,000 square feet of newly developed space, a $20 million redevelopment project that was officially unveiled Feb. 6.

“This transfer consolidates specialized ambulatory care services at Hotel Dieu, providing comfort and convenience for patients in a setting designed to support the most innovative and excellent practices in ambulatory care,” says Dr. David Pichora, Hotel Dieu’s Chief Executive Officer.
