Pediatric walk-in clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital open during holiday break

Parents and caregivers with sick little ones will have pediatric health care close at hand during the Christmas break thanks to holiday hours in the Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital.  The walk-in clinic will be operating 9 am to 12 noon on Dec. 24 and from 10 am to 4 pm, Dec. 28 to 31 inclusive.

“We anticipate an increase in activity over the Christmas break, when the influenza season hits its peak,” says Dr. Richard van Wylick, medical director of the Children’s Outpatient Centre.  “To best serve our patients and community, we decided to run the walk-in clinic during the holidays this year, although our booked clinics will remain closed.”

Other options for non-urgent medical care

Along with the pediatric walk-in clinic at Hotel Dieu, patients and families who need non-urgent medical care over the holidays are encouraged to consider several options before heading to an Emergency Department, where they could have a longer-than-usual wait time.  These include:

  • checking with Telehealth Ontario, which provides access to a registered nurse 24 hours every day who will assess your symptoms and help decide what kind of medical help you need and where to get it—call 1-866-797-0000;  TTY line at 1-866-797-0007
  • consulting a new listing of health care service availability at www.southeasthealthline.ca, which provides locations and hours for non-emergency medical services open this holiday season, including walk-in clinics for Family Health Teams
  • visiting the Urgent Care Centre at Hotel Dieu, open 8 am to 8 pm, every day of the year for non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries that cannot wait for a visit to the family doctor.

Anyone with acute life-threatening illness or injury should call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Department.

In addition, at this busy time of year people are encouraged to check their prescriptions and ensure that medication renewals are done before their physician’s office or pharmacy closes for the holidays.
