Hotel Dieu Hospital reminds patients to stay home if feeling unwell

Patient getting needle in the armWith influenza season approaching, Hotel Dieu Hospital is reminding patients and families to get their annual flu shot, be vigilant about washing their hands and to stay home if they are feeling unwell in order to protect themselves, their families and others in the community.  Patients who need to cancel a hospital appointment due to illness or who are unsure if they should come due to illness should call the number on their appointment slip.

Everyone is susceptible to getting the flu, which is why you should know that:

  • you should get a flu shot every year and get it early since it can take up to two weeks to build up immunity

  • getting the flu vaccine protects you and your family

  • the flu virus can change so it’s important to get a flu shot every year

  • when you get vaccinated against the flu, you build up your immunity, making you stronger and more resistant to the virus

  • the flu vaccine is safe and well tolerated with most common reactions including soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, lasting up to two days; serious reactions from the vaccine are rare

  • hand washing, sneezing or coughing into your sleeve and staying home when you are sick reduces the risk of the flu, but it’s not enough—get the flu shot!

  • it’s now more convenient than ever to get your free flu shot at participating pharmacies, your health care provider’s office, a workplace flu clinic or at a public health unit clinic.  For the times and locations of walk-in influenza clinics visit the KFL&A Public Health website.
