Queen’s University opens neuroscience research labs at Hotel Dieu Hospital

Dignitaries cutting ribbon for new labThe Queen’s University Centre for Neuroscience Studies (CNS) announced today the launch of its new clinical labs at Hotel Dieu Hospital. The labs represent an opportunity for neuroscience researchers at Queen’s to participate in clinical research next to colleagues providing care in the hospital’s outpatient clinics.

Open House showcases excellence in diabetes services at Hotel Dieu Hospital

Hotel Dieu Hospital will be showcasing its excellent diabetes services with an Open House on World Diabetes Day, Friday, November 14.

Between 9 am and 1 pm, the community is invited to meet the hospital’s diabetes team, tour the Diabetes Education & Management Centre (DEMC), check out displays and participate in information sessions on foot care, insulin pumps, glucose, diet, exercise and more.

“I couldn’t manage without this team,” says Cathy Devreeze, who started using an insulin pump three years ago to control her Type 1 diabetes.

From caring for children and adolescents experiencing a mental health crisis, to serving as mentors and cheerleaders for other staff, to jumping in with both feet whenever a need arises, four individuals were honoured late yesterday at Hotel Dieu Hospital for their tremendous contributions.

Patient getting needle in the armWith influenza season approaching, Hotel Dieu Hospital is reminding patients and families to get their annual flu shot, be vigilant about washing their hands and to stay home if they are feeling unwell in order to protect themselves, their families and others in the community.  Patients who need to cancel a hospital appointment due to illness or who are unsure if they should come due to illness should call the number on their appointment

No longer wearing that winter coat? Donate it to the Hotel Dieu Hospital Annual Coat Drive

With blustery days just around the corner, Hotel Dieu Hospital is once again looking for clean, gently used winter coats to help make the upcoming chilly season a bit warmer for many in our community.

The hospital will be collecting coats during regular business hours, Monday to Friday, Oct. 20 to Nov. 12.  Items can be dropped off in bins conveniently located just inside its Sydenham Street entrance (upper level).  In particular, people are encouraged to donate down-filled-style coats and ski jackets.  As well, men’s winter coats are a special priority.

Representatives from the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) gathered today to kick off in grand style a fundraising initiative in support of ear, nose and throat care at Hotel Dieu Hospital.

Two significant gifts toward the expected $1.95 million project at Hotel Dieu were announced.  The Anna & Edward C. Churchill Foundation made a $100,000 gift, while trustees from the Estate of Larry Gibson announced they will match donations to the project up to a maximum of $200,000.

Child Development Centre celebrates 40 years of caring for kids with special needs

(Kingston, ON, Sept. 4, 2014) Nobody loves a birthday party more than kids, and this month children with special needs in our community will be helping to celebrate a special one when the Child Development Centre (CDC) at Hotel Dieu Hospital hits the big 4-0.

One of 21 Children’s Treatment Centres in Ontario, the CDC will be marking four decades of providing services for children and youth who have neurological, physical or developmental disabilities or impairments.

Fitness guru lends a hand to Child Development Centre

(July 15, 2014)  On Wednesday, July 23, fitness guru John Stanton will be in town to support a special Run/Walk geared to raising funds for children with special needs in the Child Development Centre at Hotel Dieu Hospital.

Running Room founder Stanton will help to host Run 4 The Kids, a 3K and 5K Run/Walk event that dovetails with the grand opening of the Running Room’s new location at 255 Princess St.

Appointment of Chief of Medical & Academic Affairs/Chief of Staff

(June 26, 2014)  The Board of Directors of Hotel Dieu Hospital announced today that Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick has been appointed as Chief of Medical & Academic Affairs/Chief of Staff effective September 1, 2014. Dr. Fitzpatrick takes over from Dr. John Leverette who was appointed as Interim Chief of Medical & Academic Affairs/Chief of Staff of Hotel Dieu Hospital in late January. The Board thanks Dr. Leverette for his able leadership during this interim period and is pleased that he will continue in his role as Director of Medical Affairs.

New hours for Urgent Care Centre take effect today

Starting today, the Urgent Care Centre (UCC) at Hotel Dieu Hospital will be open from 8 am to 8 pm, 365 days of the year. The UCC was previously open until 10 pm.Urgent Care Centre - Hotel Dieu Hopital

Hotel Dieu Hospital Food Blitz hits the streets May 14

Patients rate Hotel Dieu Hospital top performer

(Kingston, ON, May 1/2014) Hotel Dieu Hospital received excellent performance ratings three times over in a recent survey of Ontario hospitals that gave patients an opportunity to rate the quality of health care they received and their interaction with those providing that care.

(Kingston, ON, March 31, 2014) On April 1, 2014, Hotel Dieu Hospital will officially open a new cutting-edge eye treatment centre, a facility geared to ensuring patients with macular disease can access the latest sight-saving treatments.

The first of its kind in Canada, the Macular Treatment Centre features the most current diagnostic testing and a large procedure theatre where patients with macular disease can have therapeutic treatments such as precise intraocular eye injections for age-related macular degeneration done in a safe and efficient manner.
