How do you nourish your body?

It’s a question that we ask in our clinic every day. And the answer is too often ‘I don’t know.’

It’s a question that we ask in our clinic every day. And the answer is too often ‘I don’t know.’

It seems that we are all experts in caring for others. We make sure that our kids eat breakfast and have broccoli on their dinner plate. Instead of sitting down to eat, we are busy cleaning plates and tidying messes. Instead of taking a 30 minute walk at our lunch break, we stay inside to hover over keyboards. Instead of having a conversation at suppertime, we are browsing our smartphones. Instead of taking a few deep breaths after a stressful day, we ‘power through’ and use television and snacks to distract our moving minds.

It’s time to approach the body with kindness. We are deserving of such attention. Start today by taking time to observe your hands when you wake up. Sit down to eat breakfast. Look at the foods you eat through the day and gently ask ‘how do these foods nourish my body?’ Make it a necessity to turn off screens when you are about to eat. If there is an opportunity for a break, take one. During a difficult conversation, stop and take a slow, deep breath. Set aside time each day where you notice how you breathe, how your heart beats, what causes you tension and what brings you peace.

As we set aside time to know ourselves and treat ourselves with kindness, we ultimately nourish ourselves. As we nourish ourselves, we become healthier. As we become healthier, our lives become more enjoyable. And we all are deserving of joy. Go ahead, start to indulge today.  Nourish your body.
