Medical Assistance in Dying

Medical Assistance in Dying and Hotel Dieu Hospital

As a Catholic healthcare provider, Hotel Dieu Hospital does not provide medical assistance in dying, physician-assisted death, assisted suicide or voluntary euthanasia. However, we believe that helping to explore the nature of a person’s request for medical assistance in dying is completely consistent with our moral and ethical traditions.  We are committed to compassionately and respectfully engaging with that person in non-coercive conversations about all treatment and care options available at Hotel Dieu Hospital to help alleviate his or her deep suffering.  This includes addressing the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of persons who are dying and their families, and providing effective and timely pain and symptom management as outlined in the Health Ethics Guide, the foundational ethics resource used by Hotel Dieu Hospital and all Catholic health care organizations in Canada.
