The Jeanne Mance Foundation
The Foundation of Hotel Dieu Hospital is named for the first woman sent by the Religious Hospitallers of Saint Joseph to the New World in 1641. Jeanne Mance – a lay woman – was instructed to care for the sick in New France. In 1642, she arrived in what is now Montreal and founded the first Hotel Dieu Hospital. Jeanne Mance died in 1673.
Today, the spirit of Jeanne Mance continues to be an inspiration to those who seek to meet the needs of the sick and afflicted in a new era of health care. The Jeanne Mance Foundation directs funds to areas of need within the hospital in keeping with the Mission and Philosophy of the Religious Hospitallers of Saint Joseph of the Hotel Dieu of Kingston. The Foundation Board meets regularly to consider priority needs and direct funds accordingly.
The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) represents the Jeanne Mance Foundation and Hotel Dieu Hospital in the conduct of all fundraising activities on their behalf.
Proceeds from fundraising efforts are presented to the Jeanne Mance Foundation (through the UHKF) as either Unrestricted or Restricted gifts.
Unrestricted gifts are available to the Jeanne Mance Foundation to allocate as the Jeanne Mance Foundation sees fit, according to the greatest needs identified by the Jeanne Mance Foundation administration and Board.
Restricted gifts are presented to the Jeanne Mance Foundation with a direction from the donor(s) to use the funds for a special purpose. Donor directed special purpose funds might be broad in scope (e.g. a general Equipment, Research and/or Education Fund) or may be very specific in nature (e.g. a particular item for a specific program at Hotel Dieu Hospital). Restricted gifts are deposited to a Jeanne Mance Foundation “Designated Fund” in accordance with the donor’s wishes. The Jeanne Mance Foundation maintains designated funds for services across the organization.
