Jeanne Mance
co-foundress of Montreal, 1606-1673

The first lay nurse in North America, Jeanne Mance was also the first administrator of the Hotel Dieu Hospital of Montreal, a position she held until her death in June, 1673.

The Religious Hospitallers of Saint Joseph, founded in France and dedicated to the care of the sick, joined Jeanne Mance in Montreal in 1659, where members of the congregation still carry on the work she began.

In 1845, three of these Sisters came to Kingston to establish a hospital - Hotel Dieu of Kingston. Today, the spirit of Jeanne Mance continues to be an inspiration to those who seek to meet the needs of the sick and afflicted in a new era of health care.1
