2014 June 16: New hours for Urgent Care Centre take effect today Urgent Care Centre (UCC) at Hotel Dieu Hospital will be open from 8 am to 8 pm, 365 days of the year.

2014 June 13: Attention all golfers in the Tricia Anson Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament has been cancelled today and is rescheduled for Monday, July 21. Questions maybe directed to Lynn Brown at Kawartha Credit Union on Monday.

2014 May 27: Hotel Dieu Hospital adjusting Urgent Care Centre hours As of June 16, 2014, the Urgent Care Centre (UCC) at Hotel Dieu Hospital will be changing its hours of operation, opening at 8 am and closing at 8 pm, 365 days of the year. The adjustment is geared to maximizing the hospital’s capacity to assess and treat patients seeking care for non-life-threatening injuries/illnesses and to reducing wait times for those patients and families.

2014 May 15: Hotel Dieu Hospital Food Blitz takes in 63,200 pounds of food

2014 May 5: Hotel Dieu Hospital Food Blitz hits the streets May 14 Volunteer canvassers for the 29th Annual Hotel Dieu Hospital Food Blitz will be running door to door between 6 and 9 pm, Wednesday, May 14, their sights set on collecting 100,000 non-perishable food items for the Partners in Mission Food Bank.

2014 May 2: Patients rate Hotel Dieu Hospital top performer Hotel Dieu Hospital received excellent performance ratings three times over in a recent survey of Ontario hospitals that gave patients an opportunity to rate the quality of health care they received and their interaction with those providing that care.

Two dermatologists recruited, clinics underway at Hotel Dieu Hospital

The shortage of dermatologists in this region—and how that has translated into long waits or travel outside the area to see a skin specialist—is about to end. This month, the Department of Medicine at Queen’s University is launching a new academic Division of Dermatology that will base its specialized clinics at Hotel Dieu Hospital and the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario. WHAT: The Research Institute at Hotel Dieu Hospital presents Seeing & Reaching: How simple behavioural tasks teach us about the brain in health and disease, a free event open to the public that explores exciting neuroscience research into using simple tasks such as eye movement to predict autism or Alzheimer’s disease.

March 26: Can eye movements help doctors predict Alzheimer’s?
The Research Institute at Hotel Dieu Hospital hosts Seeing & Reaching: How simple behavioural tasks teach us about the brain in health and disease, 6:30-8:30 pm, Tuesday, April 8, Central Branch of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library. Neuroscience researchers will explain and demonstrate how tasks as simple as eye movement can predict whether a child is autistic or an adult will develop Alzheimer’s. February 20: Community event profiles French language services at Hotel Dieu Hospital
Accessing healthcare services in French at Hotel Dieu Hospital is the topic of a community event, 7-8 pm, Tuesday, March 4 at the Centre culturel Frontenac, 711 Dalton Ave. The event will be conducted entirely in French and will be a chance for the Francophone community to learn how Hotel Dieu is working to improve access for French-speaking patients and families. Speakers include Dr. Julie Blais, a bilingual psychologist who will talk about the warning signs of mental illness in children and how parents can seek help. Details: 613-544-3310, ext. 2656.

January 20: Coat Room now closed at Hotel Dieu Hospital The Hotel Dieu Hospital Coat Room has now closed for the season and the hospital is no longer accepting or distributing winter coats/clothing. Thank you to everyone who contributed this year.

KFL&A Public Health is holding a walk-in flu clinic today from 4:30 to 7 p.m. There is no need to book an appointment or to call the office. Influenza immunizations are also still available through family physicians and pharmacists.

They hail from across the organization and they’ve done everything from helping families launch the local Down Syndrome Association to logging more than 30 years of volunteer service to donating endless lunch hours to build a successful community-wide run/walk in support of children with special needs.

July 18: City starts installing speed bumps on Monday
The City will be installing speed humps on Brock Street between Montreal and Sydenham Streets starting Monday, July 22. Motorists and cyclists can expect significant delays on Brock Street over the following two weeks as this work is completed. The speed humps are designed to improve pedestrian safety on Brock in the vicinity of Hotel Dieu, although the City continues to discourage mid-block crossing and urges pedestrians to cross at the traffic signal at Montreal and Brock Street.

June 24: PSA-Pediatric walk-in clinic closed for Canada Day weekend The Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital will be CLOSED Friday, June 28 and Monday, July 1. For urgent care, pediatric patients and families can go to the hospital?s Urgent Care Centre, open every day from 8 am to 10 pm.

June 19: On behalf of Volunteer Services and The Brockview Caf? we would like to welcome Visitors and Staff to enjoy a relaxing lunch or snack on the new patio located near the main entrance on Brock Street. 2013 May 16: Regular screening for glaucoma is critical to diagnosing glaucoma says a Queen?s University study led by Hotel Dieu ophthalmologist Dr. Sanjay Sharma. Known as a silent thief of vision, glaucoma affects nearly 3% of the population. A new meta-analysis of literature on glaucoma conducted by the Queen?s research team was published this month in JAMA ? the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study highlights the importance of regular screenings for glaucoma especially for those over the age of 40. To learn more click here

2013 May 16: Food Blitz hauls in almost 84,000 pounds of non-perishable goods overnight with more still flowing in.

May 15: A study released this week by Cancer Care Ontario has found digital computed radiography mammography, or CR mammography, to be less effective in detecting breast cancer than conventional screen film mammography and digital direct radiography mammography, or DR mammography. At Hotel Dieu Hospital, we have never used CR mammography. We have used DR mammography exclusively since 2008, and prior to that we used screen film mammography. Congratulations to Dr. Stephen Archer, one of the world?s top cardiologists and head of the department of medicine at Queen?s University, on winning the prestigious Heart of Gold award for his volunteer work for the American Heart Association. In his role as president of the Chicagoland American Heart Association Board, Dr. Archer led the creation of Mission Lifeline, part of a U.S. national strategy to ensure patients receive timely care after a severe heart attack prior to arriving at the hospital.
