It’s All Greek To Me: Part 1

Greek yogurt, also known as “strained yogurt”, has become increasing popular not only for its thick and creamy texture, but also for its impressive nutritional value. Greek yogurt is traditional yogurt that has been strained a second time following the fermentation process. This extra straining process reduces the content of natural sugar in yogurt by approximately half and doubles the protein! Keep in mind that sweetened versions, whether it’s Greek or traditional, can contain high amounts of sugar.  It’s always best to purchase plain and sweeten it yourself. As with all yogurts, the fat content can vary. Stick to lower fat versions with 2% Milk Fat (M.F.) or less. 

We love Greek yogurt for its versatility. It can be added to a variety of foods and recipes to improve flavor, texture, and nutritional value. We encourage you to get creative, feel adventurous, and try Greek yogurt in these exciting ways:

  1. Anywhere you would use sour cream, use plain Greek yogurt instead. You will be surprised at how similar they taste! Think baked potatoes, tacos or fajitas, in recipes, etc. It is an easy swap that will help boost your protein intake and reduce your fat intake. We bet your family won’t even notice!
  2. Boost the protein content of soups and stews, not to mention add delectable creaminess, by stirring in a spoonful of Greek yogurt. Another option is to replace heavy creams in these recipes with Greek yogurt.
  3. Make a vegetable dip! Combine a teaspoon each of garlic powder, dried parsley and dried dill with one minced shallot and a dash of pepper into plain non-fat Greek yogurt for a tasty ranch style veggie dip.
