News: RBC confirms grant to support children's mental health in Kingston

RBC CONFIRMS GRANT TO SUPPORT CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH IN KINGSTON

(2015 December) The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Foundation has confirmed a $25,000 grant to support Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Hotel Dieu Hospital (HDH) and their care partners, Pathways for Children and Youth Kingston.

“This is tremendous opportunity to improve care for a special patient population,” said University Hospitals Kingston Foundation’s Executive Director, Denise Cumming. “With RBC's help, these patients will have faster access to service and less uncertainty about their wait times. It is an investment in improved quality of life.”

Currently, referrals are often made to both Hotel Dieu Hospital and Pathways, resulting in children and youth in need of care being on two waitlists. The RBC grant will help to establish a streamlined referral process. This way, referrals from community and hospital physicians can be triaged so young patients are able to receive timely treatment in the right setting—whether it be through community-based services at Pathways or through outpatient mental health at Hotel Dieu.

“The benefits of children getting mental health care faster and in the right setting are wonderful,” said Dr. Sarosh Khalid-Khan, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Hotel Dieu Hospital. “All of us here at Hotel Dieu are grateful for the chance to improve care for these patients.”

RBC has provided more than $20 million to children’s mental health organizations dedicated to helping kids and families get the programs and resources they need. This is the first time they have made a grant to Kingston’s hospitals.
“We at RBC understand the toll mental illness can take on youth and their families, as well as the workplace, school and our communities,” shared Vice President Kingston Quinte Commercial Financial Services, Carrie Batt.  “That’s why we are committed to supporting access to care for young people through Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Hotel Dieu Hospital and Pathways for Children and Youth Kingston.”

UHKF announces next major joint campaign goal of $65 million

(2015 October) The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) has announced its next major fundraising campaign, Extraordinary People, Innovative Healthcare, with a goal to raise $65 million to benefit Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston General Hospital (KGH) and Providence Care.

At the public launch of the campaign on October 2, campaign chair Susan Creasy spoke about the importance of supporting local health care.

“Every day, we are inspired by the support that community members, businesses and organizations provide,” said Creasy. “We’re also inspired by your stories and your journey with health care. It fuels our desire to ensure you have access to the care you deserve.”

At the launch, guests were joined by hospital representatives who shared their own perspectives on innovation in health care as well as warm words about the extraordinary staff who bring that innovation to life.

“I’m so impressed with the passion and dedication of everyone I’ve worked with over the years,” said Dr. Annette McCallum, head of Diagnostic Radiology for Kingston’s hospitals. “We do extraordinary things, every day.”

The money raised will support a variety of programming and development between Kingston’s three hospital organizations, including:

  • Specialized acute care…that will offer newborns and their parents the best start in life and support the centre’s role as a regional hub for quality surgical care
  • Emergency care…which ensures that people in our region get the care they need when every second counts
  • Ambulatory care…to best meet the growing demands for specialized outpatient care
  • New laboratory facilities…to create new options for “personalized medicine” and a second MRI that helps us meet the urgent need for complex diagnostics
  • Long term care…to further secure Providence Manor’s reputation as a leader in long-term care, research, and education focused on our aging population
  • Ongoing equipment and education.

“Health care is about people helping people,” said Creasy. “We all have the opportunity to be extraordinary and to support innovation.”
